Weekend Spread for October 4, 2013

Holy cow! (Or maybe Boar?) It looks like we got quite the weekend ahead of us. ALL of the cards are major arcana which means big things are going down.

The first card we have is Strength. Depicted here is the young god Mabon who is trying to retrieve a comb and scissors from the top of Twrch Twylths head. Twrch Twylth is the name of an enchanted boar… it’s along and rather strange story having to do with retrieving these odd items from the top of the boars head in order to cut the hair of a giant. I don’t have a clue what it all symbolizes, but what I do like about this myth is that the challenge is not necessarily to kill the boar but to retrieve the items. I would think this game is even harder than actually hunting the boar! Just think how much strength that takes! It’s not only about physical prowess, but about skill and cunning!

The next card we have the Fool, and representing him is Peredur, who may also be known as Perceval in the King Arthur legends. He is the young knight who’s mother tries to keep him home safe and not have him become a knight by dressing him as a girl. When he sees Arthur’s knights in their shining armor in he thinks at first they are angels. Finally, his mother tells him the truth and first thing he does is run off to join Arthur. He is not your traditional fool card. In traditional fool cards, the fool is dancing treacherously close to the edge, oblivious of danger. Peredur is leaping over the cliff, ready to take on any challenge that might meet him along his journey. He is an innocent youth, but he also is at his prime for growth and change. There is nothing accidental about him! He’s pursuing the challenge!

The last card we have is the Moon. The moon in the Llewellyn Tarot is symbolized by the “Lake of Maidens”. Quite honestly, I need to research the Lake of Maidens but traditionally the Moon is a card symbolizing mystery, intuition, wisdom and the unknown.

It seems to me that this weekend we will be taking a leap of faith! Eagerly meeting the challenges of the unknown regardless of what might be waiting for us on the other side of the gorge!

All y’all will have to write to me and tell me what YOUR weekend was like! Looks like it’s going to be exciting!

Blessings and good luck!

  1. I’m sure the boar symbolizes women. “The challenge is not necessarily to kill the boar but to retrieve the items . . . . I would think this game is even harder than actually hunting the boar . . . It’s not only about physical prowess, but about skill and cunning.”

Wonder who the Lady of the Lake of Maidens is?

Incidentally, the odds of drawing 3 Major Arcana in a 3-card spread is slightly less than 1.5%.

HA! Maybe! The boar is an enchanted boar from an Arthur story, some guy who’s been transformed, can’t recall who. I’m going to have to look it up again. Being the Arthur expert, do you know this story? Is it familiar to you? i have heard of The Lake of Maidens, read about it in passing, but can’t remember anything specific. I wonder if it’s the lake surrounding Avalon. When I get home and have aminute i want to research it further. I love having a deck like this that i am not as familiar with. I learn new things and I’ve wanted to do more in depth research on welsh mythology.

      • The story of the boar is from Culhwch and Olwen, which is a very old Welsh tale, possibly the earliest Arthurian tale. I heard about it in a tape lecture series that Hallie loaned me, but don’t know it well at all. There’s a version included in the Oxford edition of the Mabinogion; think I’ll have to buy that.

Oh right, ok, that’s sounding more familiar. I think i have an order in for that edition at amazon. Believe it or not they were backordered on it!

Ok, so for me it was showing the house once and getting an offer….
